The knight is to be recentralized via d6. If White prevents it with 16 c5 then he has forfeited any pressure along the c-file.

16 Bc3 Ncd6 17 cxd5 Nxc3!

An important lesson in the art of exchanging. Black exchanges before White can play Bb4 when he has solid domination of the queenside. Furthermore, Nakamura wants the a5-square for his queen.

18 Rxc3 Bxd5!

The active choice. Besides, after 18 ... cxd5 the reply 19 Ng5 is awkward. Having maintained the pawn on c6, where it obstructs any action by the white rooks along the c-file, Nakamura is ready to build up pressure of his own with moves like ... Qa5 and ... Rab8, exploiting the b-file.

19 Ne5!

Anand, however, has other ideas. He won’t give Black the necessary time to build up a queenside initiative.

19 ... Bxg2 20 Kxg2 Bxe5 21 dxe5

It looks as if Black’s game is about to collapse, but Nakamura is ready to counterattack.
